PSN Store Down Until 11PM PST Tonight
April 14th, 2008If by chance you were wondering why you couldn’t get your fix on the stale two week old content on the PS3 today, it’s because since 6.00 A.M PST this morning, the store was taken down to do complete the final touches to the highly publicized PSN Store revamp. The most notable changes is the transition from a web-browser interface to that of a program, much like the Xbox Marketplace. The new store also promises to offer more intuitive and better organization of the content available and all future content. No word yet if the Thursday-only update schedule is still in place, as opposed to the 24/7 implementation of new content on the XBL Marketplace . Unfortunately, all signs points to PSN Thursday being here to stay. A shame really since it was amongst one of the few things I thought Sony didn’t get right.
COD4 junkies need not fret though, as online functionality in PS3 games still works, so PSN isn’t totally out of commission. What is our reward for the downtime, besides a stay on our voluntary conversion of tangible money for intangible content? A sweet, juicy firmware 2.30 update, which throws in the new store and for the audiophile home theater enthusiaists, DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master support.

Upcoming PS3 Firmware Adds Profile 2.0 (BD-Live), Other Goodies
March 20th, 2008According to the official Playstation blog, PS3 owners can expect firmware upgrade 2.20 within “the next few days” and with it is coming a bevy of internal fixes. The highlight of this upcoming update is of course the BD-Live upgrade for the Blu-Ray function, as it enables new feature such as web-based content and more interactive features (note that there aren’t any Profile 2.0 enabled discs yet, nor is any standalone Blu-Ray player). Other major features being implemented onto the system are:
While not the most requested of additions, they address certain shortcomings of it’s media functionality, such as the lifting of restrictions of the WMV and DivX files, the improvement of the PS3 browser, and playlists for the PSP for those who use their PSP as their primary MP3 player.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Now With 63% More Game!
March 6th, 2008Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is still on schedule for its U.S debut on the PS3 next month, and it’s bringing along all new features, such as in-depth car customization, two player split screen support, an all new “Drift Mode”, which looks to fancy up what primarily has been a two button function with drift angles, racing lines, and speeds, all to be factored within “evaluation zones” throughout the race course. An extra track has also been included on the disc, bringing the total up to 6, each track having two variations. Multiplayer support of up to 16 people is also included. GT5:P is due out on April 17th and has a retail price of $39.99, a reasonable amount considering that we’re essentially getting just half a game, whilst other companies have tried to get away with petite sized games at the full $59.99 MSRP(You’re on notice, Heavenly Sword).
The full vehicle roster is available after the jump.
Burnout Paradise 1.2 Patch Details
March 5th, 2008Criterion today released some new information on their upcoming title update for Burnout Paradise, promising fixes for bugs they deem to be “High Priority”. No word yet as to when it will be released on Xbox Live and the Playstation Network, but the list seems to be pretty comprehensive and complete. This particular blogger hasn’t noticed many of the issues listed in the patch details, with the only notable one being the connection loss that occurs when 8 players fill a room and players constantly leave and join back in. It’s nice to know however that EA is actually taking into consideration player feedback, as community interaction is something the video game megacorporation isn’t particularly known for. Hopefully this sets a precedent for themselves to follow, as many quality games have been left out to dry by EA, notably Battlefield 2: Modern Combat and Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars for the Xbox 360. The full Criterion press release, including the full list of bug fixes, is available after the jump.
PSN Thursdays: February 7th
February 7th, 2008This week’s PSN Store update certainly isn’t anything to write home about, but there are a few downloads worth mentioning. The PS1 Classics list adds the 3D platformer Crash Bandicoot: Warped (Crash Bandicoot 3) today, priced at US $5.99. With a 91 overall Metacritic rating and PS3/PSP compatibility, it is definitely one of the better Classic releases thus far. Go! Sports Skydiving is the other full game release this week at US $4.99, however it does not seem to deviate far from the quality of other Go! games, which means that passing on the game this week wouldn’t be the worst penny-pinching tactic you could come up with. If ”frugal” means more to you than just a silly sounding word, check out the demo for Lost Planet: Extreme Conditioning, the early 2007 action 360 game, which makes its debut on the PS3 and combining both the offline and online demos previously released on the Xbox Live Marketplace into one download. A variety of promotional videos, such as trailers, a Burnout: Paradise developer diary, and wallpaper are also available to download for free as well. As usual, Rock Band receives its weekly DLC, with Calling Dr. Love by KISS, We Care a Lot by Faith No More, and Roam by the B-52’s. You can find the full list of this week’s content after the jump.
