Fix your console! The Red Ring of Death epidemic has gone from an annoyance to early adopters to a term synonymous with the Xbox brand. As more and more casual gamers upgrade from their PS2, they aren’t going to want an unreliable system, despite all of the obvious plusses. The three-year warranty helps, but doesn’t help your image any. MS needs to stop production on older models until they get a new, reliable hardware revision and then soft launch it. Any boxes sent in for repair would be replaced by the new revision, free of charge. And that leads us to #2.

- Fix your DRM! I understand the need for DRM and realize it needs to be there, but with the amount of replaced consoles, or simply loyal customers that upgrade to a newer model, everyone eventually is affected. For the uninformed, Microsoft’s DRM system keys content to only play on the console it was purchased on or by the gamertag associated with the purchase. If the console changes, the gamertag has to be signed into Live to verify it owns the content, making the content inaccessible offline. Currently Microsoft will “rekey” the content with enough bitching to Customer Service, but the process takes around three weeks. Make the process faster and more automated.

- Get out of SKU Hell! It’s a pain in the ass keeping up with the differences between all the versions of Xboxes out there and I write and read about videogames every day. Someone who doesn’t know any better, or worse, relying on some Best Buy lackey, is screwed. Make one version of the 360, put a hard drive in it and quit trying to compete with the Wii’s price point. Developers are also hindered by having to develop for the tard pack. Let them make games that require the harddive for parity with PS3 games and lower the price on the damn thing already. $179 for a 120 GB drive is outright robbery.

- Quit Screwing People with Extra Costs! Ok, so I’ve finally convinced my friend to pick up a 360 over the PS3 and now comes the fun part. Depending on which SKU they purchased, they may need to drop another hundred on a hard drive, or a hundred on the wireless adaptor, plus subscription to Xbox Live. That’s potentially another $250 on top of the console price and before the costs of any additional games, controllers or accessories. Sure, these are all “optional” pieces of equipment, but the cost is definitely a deterrent for gamers that need them. Lower the price of the wireless adaptor and hard drives, or offer a discount on the harddrive with purchase of a game that requires it.

- Make Live Free! Everyone else is doing it and you wanna be cool too don’t you MS? Casual gamers don’t care about a lot of the features of Xbox Live, they just want to play CoD4 with their friends and don’t want to pay extra to do so. Make Live ad-based for basic peer-to-peer gaming and if you still want to offer a pay service, incentivize it with no ads, dedicated servers, or more free premium content. Early demos don’t cut it anymore.

TV/Music Subscription Plans! The Live backend is already integrated with the Zune Marketplace since MS Points can be used to purchase songs so it’s not a far reach to make the music available to Xbox Live members as a subscription. Also the amount of video content on Marketplace is staggering. Instead of forcing people to piecemeal together seasons of shows, let them subscribe or sell all-access passes to Network programming. This would be a great alternative to cable or satellite.

- Advertise your features to the casual market! For casual PS2 owners, the concept of DLC and renting movies on a console is still pretty foreign. MS needs to educate them on all the cool things they can do with their system. Media Center integration with Tivo-like abilities, media streaming and DVD upconversion are all pretty nifty features that are often overlooked. This will be brought to the forefront when GTAIV brings in new next-gen gamers en masse. They need to know why exclusive DLC is important.

- Add more Social Networking to Live! Never underestimate the power of peer pressure. The fact that you can see what you’re friends are playing on Live has no doubt sold a lot of games. Community has always been one of Microsoft’s strongest aspects, and with a little tweaking, it could really go to the next level. Add clan support and integrate Live with the MS Spaces social networking site to allow for on-dashboard profiles, photos, blogs, etc. More friends equal more peer pressure which means more sales.

- Add Meta-Achievements! OK, this one is a little self-serving since I’m an Achievement Whore. Achievements are great but their novelty is starting to wear off. Reinvigorate the system by adding another layer to Achievements, similar to Badges on 360voice.com, that award players for things like earning 100% of Achievements on multiple retail and arcade games, or excelling in certain genres. They could even add badges to encourage the use of other aspects of the system, like an award for listening to 100 hours of music.

Rock Band Weekly DLC - Disturbing Cheeseburger Edition
June 2nd, 2008It’s a rather eclectic week for Rock Band DLC. On one hand we’re getting a 3-pack of classic Jimmy Buffet and on the other, a 3-pack of new hard rock from Disturbed (or Disturburbed if you’re Microsoft.) Hey variety is always a good thing.
From the Rock Band forums:
Ready to get your head spinning? This week are we really covering the spread. First we have a three pack of songs from Jimmy Buffett for $1.99 each (160 Microsoft Points) or $5.49 (440 Microsoft Points) for the pack. Jimmy Buffett rerecorded the three songs for exclusive use in Rock Band, turns out he really digs the game.
Also along for the ride this week is the long-awaited Disturbed three-pack of songs from their new album INDESTRUCTIBLE. Best Buy recently announced they are partnering with MTV Games and Hamonix to offer Disturbed fans the opportunity to download two free tracks from the band’s highly anticipated new album, INDESTRUCTIBLE. By pre-ordering the album at www.BestBuy.com/disturbed, fans will receive instructions to download title track “Indestructible” and “Inside The Fire” for Rock Band from Xbox Live. Both of those songs will also be available to all Rock Band owners on 360 and PS3 along with a third track from the album “Perfect Insanity”. Each Disturbed track will be available for $.99 per track (80 Microsoft Points) for a limited time, or $2.99 (240 Microsoft Points) for the three pack.
As always, you can preview before you buy below.

Rock Band Weekly DLC - The Cars
May 23rd, 2008Following the deluge of Euro tracks last week, this week brings the Cars’ self-titled debut album. For $1.99 per track (160 Microsoft Points) or $14.99 (1200 Microsoft Points) for the album, you can get:
Any fan of classic rock or recent commercials has no doubt heard several of these tracks, but you can still check them out below. Also, don’t forget you can pick up ” Gimme Three Steps” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and “Dirty Little Secret” by the All-American Rejects for a dollar next week, bringing a close to the McDonald’s dollar promotion.
So is Rock Band DLC reaching saturation yet? Is it time to start looking forward to Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero 4?

Microsoft Sees the Light - DRM Fix on the Way!
May 23rd, 2008In an interview over on Next-Gen.biz, the general manager of Xbox Live Marc Whitten let loose some great news for those of us with replaced Xbo360s. Coming next month is a tool that will allow gamers to relicense content for new consoles so they can access it while not being signed in to Xbox Live. Coming in at #2 in our Altered State column concerning Microsoft, the DRM issue has been a thorn in the side of the Alt community for some time now.
Another bit of news is that there will be no Spring Dashboard Update, and Microsoft will start removing underperforming titles from Xbox Live Arcade, if they “have been out for more than six months, have a Metacritic score of less than 65%, and have a conversion rate of less than 6%.” While we don’t have access to sales numbers, taking a look at metacritic.com, the Xbox Live Arcade titles potentially on the chopping block are:
The list is dominated by old Arcade remakes, which typically sell pretty well, so they may be safe for now. Also, no details were given on if a gamer will be able to redownload a delisted title from their download history. So does the news of a DRM fix make up for no Dashboard Update this season?

What Are Ya’ Buyin? - Fatass Edition
May 20th, 2008
Now that GTA IV has come and gone, new releases are slowly starting to show their stupid non-GTAey faces. The biggest title this week is the pop-phenom Wii Fit followed by long awaited PS3 shooter Haze, although it’s getting a less than warm reception. Some of you Living Room Idols out there may want to pick up SingStar as well. Over on the 360, and every other platform, you can get UEFA Euro 2008 soccer, but seriously, who cares. It’s soccer. On the PC, Age of Conan invites players to get their MMORPG on Barbarian (happy now?) style!
On downloadable side of things, the first Penny Arcade game hits XBLA for a pricey 1600 MS Points while the VC gets a bunch of games I’ve never heard of, minus Fatal Fury 2.

Rock Band Weekly DLC - Euro Edition
May 16th, 2008The Rock Band Weekly DLC returns with some international flair! This week’s DLC consists of the bonus tracks from the European launch of Rock Band consisting of:
Each track will be $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points) each. They will be available Tuesday on the Xbox 360 and Thursday on the PS3. GH3 players should recognize “Hier Kommt Alex” but I think charging 2 bucks for a non-English track in North America is pushing it.
If none of these do the trick, you can take advantage of the “McDonald’s Sale” and get “We Care A Lot” by Faith No More and “All the Small Things” by Blink 182 for 80 MS Points ($1) each. In case you’ve forgotten, you can preview all the tracks below.
Blur - “Beetlebum”
Oasis - “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”
Muse - “Hysteria”
Tokio Hotel - “Monsoon”
Les Wampas - “Manu Chao”
Playmo - “New Wave”

Rock Band Weekly DLC Addendum - Mötley Crüe Surprise!
April 14th, 2008Those sneaky bastards at Harmonix threw us a curveball this week with the announcement of an additional song to go along with the Classic Rock Pack.
On April 15th for Xbox 360 and April 17th for Playstation 3 , Mötley Crüe’s new single “Saints of Los Angeles” will release for 99 cents. This will be the first time a band has released a single through Rock Band, and rumor has it Metallica will premiere a new song next month in the game. Hopefully this song will do well enough to convince Harmonix to release some “Dr. Feelgood” or “Kickstart My Heart” as DLC.
As always, you can check out the new single below, and stay tuned for more DLC announcements as we get them.

What Are Ya’ Buyin? - GT5 Prologue Edition
April 14th, 2008
After last week’s dismal releases, things are looking up, unless you’re a 360 gamer. The biggest release is Gran Turismo 5: Prologue on the PS3, the gorgeous, but limited “preview” of Sony’s upcoming racer. Wii owners can get a wagglefied port the highly rated PS2 game Okami. Those of you who prefer to exchange points for games can get Rocky and Bullwinkle and Battlezone on the Arcade or Mega Turrican and Fantasy Zone on the Virtual Console.
And without further ado, the Shovelware Shit of the Week Award goes to The Sims Kitchen and Bath Interior Design Stuff simply because the title is freaking enormous and if you need an expansion pack because your Sims bathroom isn’t fancy enough, than you fail at life.

Rock Band Weekly Download - Classic Rock Plus European DLC Preview
April 11th, 2008It’s Friday, so that means another weekend full of hookers and coke. It also means a new Rock Band DLC announcement from Harmonix. This week’s DLC is the “Classic Rock Pack” featuring masters of:
Each song will be 160 MS Points ($1.99) or 440 ($5.49) MS Points for the whole pack. We knew about two of these songs from the old OXM ad, but Blondie came out of nowhere but should be fun. “Message in a Bottle” was a favorite from Guitar Hero 2 and it’s good to see it’s return. For a refresher, check out the videos below and keep on reading to hear about the upcoming European tracks.
Blondie - “Call Me”
Lynyrd Skynyrd - “Simple Man”
The Police - “Message in a Bottle”
If the Classic Rock pack doesn’t do anything for you, you can save that money for some more exotic tunes. On or around May 22, US Rock Band players will be able to download the extra tracks from the European version of Rock Band. No word has been given on exact dates or pricing but the songs will be:
Fans of GH3 should recognize “Hier Kommt Alex” as the catchy German song from the bonus tracks. You can preview the all of the songs below if you need to brush up on your French or German.
Blur - “Beetlebum”
Oasis - “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star”
Muse - “Hysteria”
Tokio Hotel - “Through the Monsoon”
Les Wamaps - “Manu Chao”
Playmo - “New Wave”
Die Toten Hosen - “Hier Kommt Alex”

What Are Ya’ Buyin? - Saving Up for GTAIV Edition
April 7th, 2008Gamers are getting a break this week with no new releases on the PS3 or 360 and nothing worth mentioning for the Wii and handhelds. Fortunately the download games are pretty good, with the classic color-coded top-down shooter Ikaruga on XBLA and NES classics Bases Loaded and Yoshi’s Cookie hitting the Virtual Console. PC gamers without Steam can now buy pieces of the Orange Box individually, so go buy Portal or something. If that’s not your thing, then Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut is available, assuming your rig can handle it. This version features four PC-exclusive investigation missions, Rooftop Race Challenge, and the Archer Stealth Assassination Challenge
Finally the Shovelware Shit of the Week is Mini Copter Adventure Flight for the Wii, sporting all the stupidity of last week’s winner, RC Mini Chopper, with an even worse name and all the waggle you can handle.

Rock Band Weekly DLC - HMX Pack
April 4th, 2008If you missed out on the February issue of OXM, you will now be able to purchase the three not-so-exclusive-anymore tracks for 99 cents a pop. Comprising the “HMX Pack” are:
Since the PlayStation Store is down for remodeling, PS3 owners will have to wait even longer for these songs. The songs are kind of meh, but I’m not surprised that Harmonix is releasing a low profile pack this week, as Sony fans would explode with fiery hatred if full albums were released while their store is down. You can check out the songs below.

ALTered State: We Fix Microsoft
April 3rd, 2008Being an Internet denizen, I like to bitch and argue. It’s in my e-blood. But other than proving my e-peen is ginormous, arguing isn’t exactly productive so I present a new series of articles. Called “ALTered State,” I offer my suggestions to fix any and everything wrong with the world via a convenient top ten nine list. First in the chute is Microsoft.
A few days ago, one of my friends asked me if he should get an Xbox 360 or a PS3. A few months ago, this would have been a no-brainer and I would have recommended the 360 without a second thought. The PS3 was overpriced, had no games and a very basic online service. Now with a price drop, BluRay victory, and a growing library of good games, the PS3 has gained a ton of momentum and is definitely a contender, if not the first choice for casual gamers finally taking the plunge to next-gen. Here’s what I think Microsoft can do to stay in the fight.

So there you have it - a few suggestions that would remedy a lot of Microsoft’s PR problems, stave off the PS3 momentum, and most importantly, let me recommend the 360 to friends and families with a clear conscience. How would you “fix” or improve the Xbox brand? Let us know!

Rock Band Weekly Download - Huge Success!
March 31st, 2008Well it finally happened. The much anticipated “Still Alive” of Portal fame, is finally out, for 360 owners anyway. In honor of April Fool’s Day, Harmonix, EA and Jonathon Coulton have all come together to bring Rock Band its first bit of free DLC. This particular song is featured at the end of Portal, and in my opinion, made the game the gaming icon it is today. Those that played Portal are no doubt thrilled with this release, while more casual gamers may be left shaking their head as this is the only release this week.
As great as the song and price are, this week’s DLC announcement isn’t without some bad news. Barring any April Fool’s joke, PS3 owners of Rock Band won’t be able to access this, or any new DLC until after the Playstation Store completes its renovations around April 17. In the meantime, they can watch the video below and pretend.

What Are Ya Buyin’? - CoD4 Again Edition
March 31st, 2008
It’s pretty bad when the highest profile title for the week is a re-release. Call of Duty 4 Game of the Year Edition hits the 360 with little more than code to download the four Variety maps later this month. The PS3 gets a big pile of nothing while the Wii gets um, Monkey King! Representing the Digital Distribution Crew this week are Mr. Driller for XBLA and Cruis’N USA along with the sadly Tenacious D-less Wonder Boy.
Poor people can check out the Shovelware Shit of the Week, RC Mini Chopper for the PS2, a port of the Wii game about those little toy helicopters. If you’re going to make a game about flying helicopters, you should at least make it about real choppers and not toys that you can buy for less than the cost of a game. You can see the rest of the games below.

What Are Ya Buyin’? - Slice and Dice Edition
March 25th, 2008
Let’s go ahead and get this going! Dark Sector, the third person, blade thrower slices onto the 360 and PS3 along with the Viking-inspired hack-and-slash Viking: Battle for Asgard. I enjoyed Conan so I may give Viking a chance. Also on the 360 this week is the cross-platform RTS, Universe at War. The Wii is making its O-face this week with Opoona, Octomania, and Obscure: The Aftermath, all games sent to die after the onslaught of Smash Brothers. The last big release this week is Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core for the PSP. The PSP has been racking up some big releases lately.
The download games this week are TiQal, the Nightime Sniffling Sneezing Coughing Aching, um, block puzzle game, and a relaunch of Switchball with improved graphics. The original launch was marred with server problems and the game wasn’t set for autodownload or featured in new games. Over on the Wii Virtual console there’s King’s Knight and Powerball.
And that brings us to the coveted Shoveware Shit of the Week. Today’s winner is so elusive, only a thumbnail-sized picture of the boxart could be found. I present you Plushees, the virtual pet simulator whose name conjures up vile imagery of furries. Enjoy while you browse the rest of the list below.

Fans have been clamoring for more Boston since a cover of “More Than a Feeling” appeared on the original Guitar Hero.
