unWanted
I wanted to like Wanted.
I really did.
The cards were all in play: I was a huge fan of the comic, I really enjoy Angelina Jolie being hot, and Morgan Freeman would be my dad in a universe that made sense - coincidentally the same universe where Carlos Mencia is working at Taco Bell and gets punched in the mouth every time he tells steals a shitty joke.
And let’s face it, comic-based movies are getting a lot better. We got a decent Hulk movie, Iron Man set the groundwork for a solid sequel, Spider-man 3…well, let’s forget Spider-man 3.
Not every movie can be Daredevil.
I knew going in that the source material was going to see some changes. After all, despite being the enlightened society that we are, the ratings board still gives rape sprees the stink eye. So they’d tweak a few scenes here and there, toning down some of the more over-the-top stuff and still delivering the solid story that the comics had, right?
Yeah, not so much.
Instead they went another way with it, changing the storyline entirely and ruining it for anyone who wanted to see a great, good, or even halfway decent rendition of the comics, and that’s a shame. This isn’t a longrunning series like X-Men or Spider-Man where they could conceivably slot the story of a film in at any point - the limited series ran just six comics and this movie was supposed to be loosely based on that series.
Turns out “loosely” really means they kept one rape spree in the movie after all - the two-hour long job they do on the plot.
Wanted is a decent enough action movie, but fans of the comics looking for something that’s at all true to the source material shouldn’t expect much here.
