Opening
This week at the box office, Owen Wilson again tries to be funny without the help other people in DRILLBIT TAYLOR. This movie is produced by Judd Apatow, who you might know from little known movies such as KNOCKED UP, SUPERBAD, and THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN. Seth Rogan, whom you know as one of the cops from SUPERBAD, co-wrote the script. Now, there is a very good chance the script is funny, but the movie suffers from one huge flaw: They are working on the assumption that Owen Wilson is funny. Sadly, this is incorrect. Owen Wilson is not funny. Owen Wilson is a side-kick in a funny movie. He’s the funny guy’s Robin. When acting on his own, trying to play a humorous role without the help of anyone with comedy skills, its a disaster. SHANGHAI KNIGHTS could be used as an example, but luckily foreign stereotypes were given the job of being funny and not Owen Wilson. YOU, ME, AND DUPREE is a fantastic example. A tired, formulaic, laugh-free comedy. “But Chuck! WEDDING CRASHERS was teh funniest movie EVAR!” Name one scene with Owen Wilson being funny by himself. Vince Vaughn or Christopher Walken provided the talent. Owen Wilson provided the other person in a conversation that the funny guy could banter with. In short, Owen Wilson’s only role in movies should be to breathe.

Also opening this week, Tyler Perry dresses up again in the same movie we see every fucking year. Take the plot synopsis of TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS: ” A funny, moving romantic drama about the power of love and family…” OH HEY! Isn’t that the same plot as all your other fucking movies? Jackass. Tyler Perry dresses up as a women realll good, but how bout changing up the formula here and there?

Tropic Thunder (HD)
This could be one of the funniest movies in a long long time. Ben Stiller, Robert Downy Jr. (playing a black man too…just saying that is funny), the sometimes hysterical sometimes unfunny Jack Black…and the plot. Everything here is set up to be an awesome movie. Plus, take another look at that trailer. The sheer scale of the movie is incredible for a comedy. Fingers crossed this movie isn’t just studios saying “Hey, lets throw a bunch of actors and money at this script and see what happens”.
