Your Webcomic Recommendations
By darth overnerd • About: Comics, Featured Articles at 12:16 am on March 16 2008In my time across the web, I’ve seen a lot of comics. And in my time in this part of the web, I’ve seen people reading far too few comics. Penny Arcade and XKCD are among my favorites but there is more to webcomics than video game comics and XKCD. There’s so much more out there. And in this article I’ll share a couple of my favorites that pretty much anyone might enjoy.
First of the bat is a comic that really finds the sweet spot between plot heavy and humor heavy. Emergency Exit is a comic about a number of residents of a very unusual apartment building. As the comic progresses it becomes apparent that there is very little that is normal about this place. Much of the character background still remains a mystery, and with an artist that knows just how much to reveal to keep the fans guessing just how well she handles humor is something worth talking about.
That said, the humor of Emergency Exit is quite random. The early comics most so, as the author hadn’t really settled into the plot yet (what author has at that point, really?) But with one main character that seems to do anything for his war on the chickens and a villain that’s overly concerned with being a good super villain. Any reader of this comic will likely find a comic whose plot will keep them enthralled while still finding a good hearty laugh when her new comic is posted.
However, if you really need a gaming comic to satisfy you, at least find something off the beaten path. Like the lounge, a comic about Italy Ishida, the owner and manager of the game and anime shop the lounge, oh did I mention she’s got a girlfriend? Yeah thought that’d grab your attention. Well first off, the comic is a bit plot heavy, it’s not the sort of comic you’d jump right into. But it’s comedy is very situational. Cute, a bit of sexy, and a whole lot of geeky. This is a comic that will likely have you caring about the characters by the time you’re done with the archive to a certain degree. And you’ll certainly be anxious for the new comic to see how the various plot-lines are progressing. The gaming refs are sometimes few and far between, but when there’s something big happening in the industry the comic will find a way to work it in. I wouldn’t say this comic is for everyone, but I think most people would find it enjoyable.
Another comic I’ve had a lot of fun reading over the years. The comic is about a number of people in an mmorpg called Mystic Revolution, but unlike say…World of Warcraft the players are able to actually interact a bit better thanks to the hardware they use to connect to the game. The story is really starting to go places with the new story line, the art is certainly unique, and I think people will find a lot to enjoy with her characters. As the story doesn’t always rely on the fact that it’s an mmo they’re in to drive things forward. More often than not the story will actually focus on the humans behind the screen as their characters. Overall I highly recommend this comic to anyone looking for a gaming comic that’s more than a little different than the average.
That’s all for this week ladies and gents, I’ll be back next week with more.
Till then, I’m addicted to webcomics!
